Burnley 1 Brighton 3

If you were doing a survey on the happiest football managers in the land on the opening games, then Brighton's Martin Hinshelwood would be high on the list.

This was his first game in charge and his team did him proud, running Burnley ragged to pull off a spectacular victory.

Hinshelwood could hardly contain his delight after goals from Steve Melton, Paul Brooker and Bobby Zamora gave the Seagulls maximum return.

"The players were magnificent and I could not have asked for a better start. People will ask me where I want to finish and I am not going to be negative, we want to get out of this division at the right hand."

But it was no laughing matter for Burnley and their manager Stan Ternent said: "It was a very poor performance and it surprised me big style.

"It may prove to be a blessing but we've got to improve on that or there's only one place we'll end up and that's in trouble."

Zamora had a goal disallowed after seven minutes for offside before Brighton swept into the lead through Melton.

Zamora supplied the pass for Melton to convert and when Brighton struck twice within the space of two minutes through Brooker and Zamora midway through the second half the result was never in doubt.

Lee Briscoe's injury-time consolation did little to quell the feeling of unrest among the Burnley supporters.

Burnley's cause was not helped by the fact the defender Arthur Gnohere was sent off for headbutting Gary Hart.
