Brighton kept their promotion challenge on track with a comfortable second successive victory - 2-0 against shot shy Wrexham at the Withdean Stadium.

Goals in each half by John Piercy and Richard Carpenter moved Mark McGee's men up to third place in the table.

The result was never in doubt after Piercy fired Brighton ahead on 11 minutes with his first goal for the club.

The former Spurs midfielder beat Andy Dibble with a snapshot from 12 yards after Guy Butters had headed on a free kick by Captain Danny Cullip.

Carpenter made certain of the points with his first league goal of the season on 65 minutes.

A cross from Nathan Jones was cleared as far as the midfielder just outside the area and Carpenter beat Dibble with a left foot chip, which went in off the crossbar.

Dibble saved Wrexham from a more comprehensive defeat.

In the first half, the experienced keeper tipped over an angled drive by 16-goal striker Leon Knight and then kept out a close range header from Chris McPhee.

Dibble also smothered Knight's toe poke at the start of the second half to keep his team in touch.

Wrexham never looked like recording a sixth away win.

They enjoyed plenty of possession but did not threaten to score until the dying stages.

Brian Carey wasted their best chance, slotting wide from point blank range after Hector Sam headed down a cross by substitute Steve Thomas.

Pierce's hopes of an extended run in the Brighton side were foiled by a first half knock which forced him off.

Brighton Manager Mark McGhee said; "I am pleased that we continued the form we showed in our previous match at Notts County." "We deserved the points. Wrexham had quite a lot of possession, but they didn't really trouble us."
