Brighton crashed to their third defeat on the trot as Walsall chalked up their second win in three days.

Quickfire strikes by front pair Steve Corica and Jorge Leitao did the trick for the Saddlers and silenced another sellout crowd at Withdean Stadium.

The visitors went ahead in the sixth minute. Robbie Pethick headed a long throw by Darren Bazeley back to the Walsall defender.

His cross was headed against a post by Gary Birch and Australian Corica pounced to knock in his second goal in successive away matches.

Worse followed for Brighton a minute later, Corica fed Leitao through the inside left channel and he cut back onto his right foot to score with an exquisite curler from the edge of the area.

Walsall were content to allow Brighton long spells of possession for the rest of the first half but the home side lacked penetration.

They had Andy Petterson to thank for a remarkable save from Leitao's point blank header and the Seagulls suffered a further blow with new signing Paul Kitson limping out of his home debut at half time with a hamstring injury.

Walsall comfartably held their lead in the second period and almost stretched it. Leitao, latching on to a long clearance from James Walker, had a low angled shot blocked by Petterson.

The closest Brighton came were curling long range efforts in each half from youngsters Daniel Marney on his full league debut and second-half substitute Shaun Wilkinson.

Both were clawed for corners by Walker to stretch Brighton's goal famine to four matches.

Walsall chief Colin Lee said: "There was still a long way to go when we were 2-0 up. We have seen teams come back, so it had to be a professional performance."

Brighton manager Martin Hinshelwood moaned: "We gave away two poor goals and that is not like us, they are honest players and everyone, including the coaching staff is hurting at the moment."
