Steve McMahon's side bounced back in style from a bad defeat at Notts County last weekend to claim all three points with a performance that carried plenty of skill and passion.

Blackpool had already come close once when they eventually took the lead on 24 minutes.

Albion were down to ten men temporarily with Gary Hart injured when Rick Wellens swung a long cross into the area which John Murphy headed down for Mike Sheron to volley home.

Albion's best chance fell to Chris Iwelumo whose shot was superbly saved from point blank range by Philip Barnes, while at the other end Wellens almost repeated the 50-yard wonder goal he scored against Port Vale earlier in the season, although on this occasion Ben Roberts was able to scramble back to make the save.

The lead was doubled 12 minutes into the second half with Wellens, Sheron and Martin Bullock linking up well to feed Spanish loan signing Pedro Matias who volleyed home coolly.

Murphy put the result beyond doubt on 78 minutes, springing the offside trap before finishing well past Roberts.

There was some consolation for Brighton seven minutes from time when lively sub John Piercy scored with a shot which took a wicked deflection off Keith Southern.

Blackpool boss Steve McMahon said: "The pleasing thing today was the passion and desire and commitment, if you get that out of any team, especially combined with the skill we have got, you will be happy."Brighton boss Mark McGhee added: "I think with QPR winning that just about seals it for them, we can forget about automatic promotion now but we need to pick up points for the play-offs starting agianst Rushden on Monday."
