We played 16 times at Roker Park, we won 2 and drew 4. Sunderland had a similar record at the Goldstone, winning 3 and drawing 3 of the 16. Our best win was a 2-0 in October 78.
Top scorer and emergency striker Adam Virgo is suspended for this game having picked up 5 bookings. Captain Danny Cullip is expected to be back from a month out for a hernia operation, and is likely to resume this seasons succesful partnership with Guy Butters in central defence.
Though there is a chance that Mark McGhee may decide to keep the Hinshelwood/Butters partnership that kept out Leeds last week, and use DC in the Targetman role that Virgs has made his own this Season.
Charlie Oatway is also expected to start having recovered from his ankle injury. Alexis Nicholas is thought to be just too far away from returning this weekend, and is likely to be available for Wednesday's game at Pride Park, Derby.
The team may line up as a 5-4-1 to accomodate Hinsh & Cullip along with Butters, or as 4-5-1 with Hinshelwood playing the holding role in Midfield. Both of these options would isolate Leon Knight up front.
The other more plausible line up would be for Hinshelwood to give his all up front in the Virgo role alongside Knight.
I expect:
Kuipers
El-Abd, Cullip, Butters, Harding
Hammond, Oatway, Carpenter, Currie
Knight, Hinshelwood
