Ravens View of Wigan v Brighton

Last updated : 23 August 2004 By Mark R

We left Worthing at 7.04 and finally arrived into Wigan at 1pm. We wandered up to "the Raven" pub, then on to the George Orwell and bumped into the BHAlba clan.

It was soon time to stroll to the ground and we joined the other 500+ Albion fans in the big vast 7,000 away side of the ground.

For 45 minutes we defended well, but then Virgo was caught for pace and possibly hesitated as he had just been booked and Ellington calmly rounded him and beat "Kippers" as the tannoy announcer called him.

Just into the second half and the game was over.

Cullip backed off and backed off and Ellington curled the ball over Kuipers. I thought he should have had it, but seeing it on TV it's a great finish.

Give a good striker that much room and he will score.

The third goal, we again gave them loads of time and Kuipers made a hash of it. Once the game was over Kuipers made several great saves to keep the score at 3-0, but by then it was tooooo late.

Kuipers - 4 The defence look very unsure in front of him
Harding - 6 defended well
Virgo - 4 caught out too often
Cullip - 3 gone to pot at the moment, rare mistakes becoming more frequent
Butters - 4 struggled against possibly the quickest striking partnership he will face this season
Mayo - 5 had space but often gave away the ball but not much support about
Nicolas - 7 my MOTM, gave 100% but nobody to pass to until Jarrett arrived out wide
Hinshelwood - 5 tried hard but is he really a midfield player?
Currie - 6 a couple of great balls and I still think with decent players about him has something to offer
Knight - 4 no service and no support, little he could do
Molango - 4 as above

subs
Jarrett - 6 prepared to run at the defence but the game was over by the time he was on
Robinson 4 - not a lot he could do

May, Jones and Hart didn't come on
