Ravens View - 4-5-1 at home??? Why??

Last updated : 11 August 2004 By Bob Gear

At Reading we looked much more composed playing 4-4-2, so we start a home game, against one of the teams we need to get points off if we are to stay up, with a lone striker.

The result, one shot in the 83rd minute that even the Fatty Taxman could have saved after 15 pints of cider.

The first goal was comedy defending, Cullip appeared to head the ball on to the post and into Kuipers arms, but the stunted growth linesman waved his flag and we were 1 down.

Talking to people in A and B blocks the ball hit the post, bounced well over the line and span back to Kuipers, so sadly a correct decision!

We struggled to pass the ball to a team mate, Virgo kept hammering the ball 30 yards to nobody. Molango was left isolated up front, nobody supported Jarrett or Currie whenever they got the ball.

The Referee then decided to put the result beyond doubt. Plymouth broke, once again Harding was caught wrong side of the man, so he chased back and the Plymouth player dived and got a penalty and a second yellow for Harding?

Plymouth worked out our two full backs were both suspect and took advantage of not having to worry about us attac king in numbers!

Second half and I expected better, perhaps a change in formation? Well no, on came Jones for Reid, but no sign of another striker, so Hart and Robinson remained on the bench. As the game stuttered on we did at last see Robinson and Hart, but for Jarrett and Molango! Negativity rules supreme.

Another gripe, we have Currie as our player with a cultured right foot, so why not let him take the corners and free kicks? Cullip is not another free kick specialist like Beckham!!!!

The game was so dire I missed having Mr Blackman behind me berating the poor passing and the atrocious officials! Come back Phil!

Kuipers - 6 made several good saves
Harding - 3 caught out several times and his bad night summed up by a harsh dismissal
Virgo - 3 carried on from his poor showing at Reading
Cullip - 3 all at sea, his lack of confidence hits the team badly
Butters - 5 solid in a poor back 4
Reid - 5 didn't create anything
Currie - 5 several good passes but lacks involvement
Nicolas - 6 put himself about but was often the lone working/running player
Jarrett - 5 no support but did try several times to run at the Plymouth back 5 but with only Molango up front ended up losing the ball
Mayo - 5 tried hard but would be better off at left back
Molango - 5 no support, didn't deserve to come off

Subs

Jones - 4 didn't create anything
Hart - 4 as above
Robinson - 5 tried hard but got lectured by the ref for being taken out by a defender!

Referee 0 out of 10

McGhee 0 out of 10 for negative tactics and substitutions

Crowd 1 out 10, so the usual Withdean atmosphere
