Poyet explained: "The way that we tried to play is the way we are going to play all season home or away.
"If it does work, fine. If not then I'm responsible. The main thing is the players understand what I want and are trying to do it."
He added: "When you become a manager you have two options - play anyhow and win football games or try and make your team play your way."
Sunderland grabbed a draw in the friendly game after Frazier Campbell scored to cancel out a penalty from Brighton's Glenn Murray, with the Albion striker also having another effort ruled out.
"The first-half is probably the best we've played since my first day here, and that's the best satisfaction I've had as a manager to see my team play my way," Poyet said.
"We've got a couple of weeks left and I'm sure we're going to get better."
The Seagulls now face Portuguese side Portimonense on Saturday.
