He told BBC Sussex: "I was getting quite emotional because I know the feelings Navs is going through.

"Fingers crossed it's not as serious as first thought. We'll have to wait until he's had his scans to decide that."

He added: "It definitely made a lot of us on the pitch think how lucky we are to have our fitness."

Midfielder Navarro is set to have a scan this week to find out the full extent of the damage to his right knee, which he sustained in Tuesday night's Carling Cup defeat.

Seagulls manager Gus Poyet is hoping the injury to the 29-year-old is not as bad as first thought.

"It's a real shame for everyone because Alan is a key player for us. I hope it's nothing serious - something that looks bad but is not," said Poyet.

"It doesn't look good. That's why you've got a squad and you've got to deal with sendings-off and injuries."
