Scottish international striker Miller, who is joining Celtic as a free agent this summer, grabbed his 12th goal of the season when he converted a 31st minute penalty.

It was enough to earn dominant Wolves their first win in seven games - but not enough to stop angry fans calling for the head of manager Glenn Hoddle following his failure to guide the club into the Premiership.

The margin of their victory should have been far greater as Brighton struggled to mount a consistent challenge.

They crashed to their 21st defeat of the season - with 11 of them coming away from home - to ensure that it was far from a happy return to Molineux for the former Brighton boss Mark McGhee.

Wolves should have been out of sight by half-time but wasted a hatful of chances.

Winger Mark Kennedy terrorised Brighton down the right flank and wasted three chances himself as well as seeing one of his crosses lifted over the bar from close range by Tomasz Frankowski.

Having managed to ride their luck, it was somewhat ironic that Brighton's downfall was of their own making.

There was no danger when Kennedy whipped in a 31st minute corner.

Inexplicably Paul McShane put his hand up to deflect the ball and the grateful Miller took full advantage to beat Wayne Henderson from the spot.

While Wolves were in control, their failure to convert their chances almost came back to haunt them on the stroke of half-time after a bout of comical defending by Joleon Lescott.

Paul Reid fired a right-wing cross into the Wolves area and Lescott stood and stared at the ball instead of trying to clear it.

Alex Frutos took advantage of his indecision to fire in a shot from 10 yards only to see his effort cleared off the line by Keith Lowe.

When Colin Kazim-Richards then tested substitute goalkeeper Michael Oakes in the 64th minute to give Brighton hope of finding a way back into the game.

But Wolves still looked the most potent side and were inches away from a second goal when Jeremie Aliadiere smashed his shot against the post after a mazy run in the 68th minute.

Not to be outdone, Brighton were then denied by the woodwork themselves three minutes later when Paul Reid lobbed the ball on to the bar.

Wolves' midfielder Colin Cameron then became the third player to be frustrated by the woodwork in the 84th minute when his 30-yard free-kick crashed off the inside of the post.
