McSheffrey's solo effort in the 50th minute was the difference between the fellow Championships strugglers in a tight FA Cup third round tie at the Withdean.

McSheffrey usually plays on the left wing for the Sky blues, but Adams' decision to switch him to the right flank paid off handsomely.

The visitors' top scorer gave Brighton's experienced full-back Kerry Mayo a torrid afternoon, culminating in his decisive goal.

McSheffrey rounded Mayo before calmly slotting his tenth of the season past Brighton's giant French keeper Florent Chaigneau from a tight angle into the far corner.

How Brighton manager Mark McGhee must wish he has McSheffrey in his squad. The Seagulls are in the Championship relegation zone because of their lack of a goalscoring threat up front.

MGhee tried something different following the £125,000 sale of the enigmatic Leon Knight to Swansea City. He started with Frenchman Sebastien Carole up front alongside Colin Kazim-Richards.

Brighton ended the tie with substitutes Mark McCammon and Jake Robinson as their strikeforce. They pressed forward relentlessly in search of an equaliser but could not find their way through a resolute Coventry defence.

Kazim-Richards spurned a good chance to equalise in the 61st minute, firing over from a Carole cross.

Carole also went close to earning Brighton a replay with 18 minutes left when he chipped onto the roof of the Coventry net from the edge of the penalty area.

Clayton Ince was recalled in goal for Coventry as Spurs didn't want loanee Marton Fulop cup-tied.

Ince enhanced his claims to play for Trinidad & Tobago in the World Cup in Germany in the summer with a solid clean sheet.

Brighton did not force him into serious action too often, but he made a fine save in the first half when parrying over a fierce shot by Alex Frutos.
