Brighton & Hove Albion fans dug deeply into their pockets on Saturday in an effort to aid the survival of Bury Football Club, the visitors to the Withdean Stadium.

The compassionate supporters, who have been through troubled times of their own, raised £3,780 in a bucket collection towards Bury's Buy-a-Seat Appeal. That total represents more than 50 pence per person who attended the match.

Tim Carder, chairman of the Albion Supporters' Club which organised the collection, said, "It's been a superb day, and I am thrilled by the sum we have raised. Plenty of
Albion fans have already contributed individually towards the Bury fund, so the total from Sussex is bigger still.

"The Bury fans will have left Brighton disappointed that their team lost but buoyed by the knowledge that we really do care about the fate of their club. The whole of football is diminished when any club goes under.

"I would like to thank all the volunteers today for their efforts, and say well done to the
Albion fans, the most generous in the country."

The news broke on the team bus on the way back up North and Joint Chairmen John Smith was on the verge of tears when told the news. “It's magnificent” Smith said. “We can't thank the Supporters of Brighton enough, they are true followers of Football.

The overall response from
Brighton has been overwhelming. Thank you everyone connected with Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club.”
