Bristol Rovers 0-1 Brighton. Chris McPhee, Oh Chris McPhee

A few changes were made to the Albion line-up from Saturday as Steve Coppell moved his formation to the more conventional 4-4-2. The team lined up like this:

Roberts
Watson, Cullip, Hinshelwood, Mayo
Hart, Oatway, Rodger, Jones
Knight, McPhee

The first half started badly with the referee judging a ball off Cullips shins to be a back pass. An 8 man Brighton wall on the goal line contained the threat.

Rovers looked the more likely in the first half and kept the Albion contingent of 511 pretty quiet.

Late in the first half Jones, who had been taking abuse due to his welshness, went down under a challenge in the penalty area and his claim for a penalty was denied.

Just minutes later and Jones saw Red. He went in for a crunching late challenge on the same Rovers player and the ref had no hesitation in sendinding him straight off.

Steve Claridge, watching the game for TV was quoted as saying that Jones should be banned for a year for his Challenge. But he's ex-pompey isn't he?

The 10 men of the Albion came out determined to win the game in the second half. Chris McPhee score from a fantastic overhead kick early on, and the Albion were rarely threatened after that.

The draw for the second round of the Carling Cup will be live on Sky Sports News and Sky Sports One this Saturday at around 5.30pm.
